It's hard to believe that we are already so close to the Lenten season! It feels like Christmas was just yesterday! I started getting our Lenten activities together and I hope to start figuring out a menu for dinner. I try to plan 10 meals at a time, it makes it much easier for me to keep the meals enjoyable. Otherwise I can't decide what to make and we end up eating pasta a' la something every night. I'll post the meals and finished activities once we get started so check back for some of our favorite recipes and craft projects and feel free (PLEASE) post some of your favorites!
This past Sunday I took Ace to Sunday school for the first time. He had such a great time! Living near the monasteries and not having any other parishes near us that offer Sunday school, he's never had the opportunity to attend. It was a wonderful treat for him.
They made this little board out of poster paper and in the center they glued a cross that said "Great Lent". Then on either side of it they pasted the words "Do more of..." and "Do less of...." and pasted various pictures of different activities such as pray more, watch less tv, help others, etc. and food items like ice cream (less of) and pb & j. They discussed each item then pasted them under the appropriate heading. It was really cute.
How do you all prepare for Lent?

We've been talking about the upcoming fast and what we fast from, but it always seems to end in "is that just for adults?" I let my children have some dairy. My youngest asks me "is today a fast day or a slow day" which makes me laugh!
The prayer of St. Ephraim and prostrations marks a difference in our morning and evenings that we all enjoy, treat solemny and I think it sets the tone for the day.
My little one is 16 mo. old and she loves books and icons, so I actually just ordered a children's book with gospel stories illustrated with icons. When she's older, I love what your son did at Sunday school.
For myself, I have made a little list of what I'd like to focus on during the fast, one of the main things being having more consistency in my prayer life. Also I am trying to think of cues that will remind me to pray throughout the day, like at 7a, 9a, noon and 3p for the hours. I wish I had a chiming clock. If I did, every hour I'd try to pray "Lord have mercy" x3 with bows (we're home a lot). I'm going to talk with Father about it and see what he recommends.
