When we finished it we read the correlating scripture verses and I explained to him that our good deeds are never overlooked or forgotten by God, they store up in Heaven forever. Ace also went to confession for the first time a few months ago so I thought it would be good to include that in our discussion. I reminded him how lucky we are for the sacrament of confession and said that when we sin it's like throwing rocks in our treasure chest. He wasn't happy with that and said "I don't want rocks in my treasure chest, I want treasures!" I then explained to him that the only way to get the rocks out was through the sacrament of confession. If we continue to confess our sins we will keep removing the rocks; and if we continue to do good deeds with a loving heart we will continue to fill our treasure chest in Heaven. Then he said with wide eyes "Boy, I wish I could see my treasure chest and play with it. I guess I'll have to wait until I go to Heaven." Then my tears came. What higher hope does a mother have than for her children to enter the Kingdom of Heaven? I pray that God keeps the zeal for His Kingdom in my children's hearts forever...

Store up your treasures in Heaven.....Lenten Treasure Chest
This is a card stock treasure chest that we got from the website of Phyllis Onest, director of Education for the Greek Archdiocese Pittsburgh Metropolis. We printed it out and then took it to Staples to have it printed onto card stock. We cut it out, colored and decorated it. It has over 40 "gold" coins with different "good deeds" printed on them. For example, read bible, help a neighbor, attend a church service, etc. Ace LOVES it! Every morning he picks his coin and then he does his good deed. It's really nice. :)

Dear Sevvi,
Thank you so much for commenting on my post and for sending along this link! I am inspired by your craftiness and child friendly explanations on Great Lent! It takes forethought to create those significant exchanges with one's family and, unfortunately, I too often let "busyness" get the upper hand. Please do continue sharing more practical ideas for keeping our kids involved in the fasts and feasts of the Church! I will definitely be back to glean from your wisdom.
Your sister in Christ,
Molly Sabourin
What an awesome idea!
It's good to have motivation like that and to start when they're YOUNG!
When I found your blog tonight, I felt both excited and like an idiot. Why? For months I've been searching for a blog by an Orthodox mom. New to the blogosphere, I enjoy a couple of other mammas' blogs, but wanted to connect with other Orthodox women. The only thing that ever showed up on the search results was for an Orthodox Jewish woman.
So, last night I decided to start my own blog, hoping to attract other Orthodox moms to share their experiences with me.
Then I found you and your list of other Orthodox moms. I'm thrilled, but feel stupid for starting my own blog. Oh well... two heads are better than one and 10 blogs are maybe better than one too.
I look forward to returning and learning more ideas for my own little kiddos.
Good luck (I mean, of course, good hard work!) with Lent,
Monica
That is such a wonderful idea! Do you have a link to where you found the printable?
I absolutely love this. I'm of a definitely different Christian denomination, Canadian Reformed, but if you take out 'confession' and put in 'prayer' we are on the exact same page here. My DD is too young for this right now but I am definitely adding a link to this to my favs and doing this activity with her when she's a bit older! :)
Thanks so much for sharing!
I most definitely love this 'store up your treasures in heaven' activity and the explanation you gave with it and am looking forwards so much to when I can do it with my daughter!
lorchick-
I'm glad you like the treasure chest; I'm sure your daughter will love doing it with you!
I love this box and would love to use it with my girls! Do you have the link for the PDF still or is it something that you have to buy? I tried to search for it online, but was unsuccessful.
Is there any chance you still have the PDF for this project? I am very interested in using this activity for our Church School kiddos.
We would really appreciate it,
Many Thanks,
Jaleen Claasen
