my story

Hello, I’m Sylvia.   If you landed on this page, you probably want to know a little more about me.  If you ended up here by mistake, click this link for one of my favorite recipes.  The least I can do is send you away with cookies.

For those of you who really do want to know more…I’m a wife, mama, writer, bookworm and knitter. I love celebrating the beauty of life in creative ways.  I was creating inspiration boards long before Pinterest came along. I’m also a Wish Granter for the Make-A-Wish foundation.  Working with those amazing kids helps me keep life in perspective and reminds me daily of what’s really important.

Some say I’m a dreamer, others a rebel.  I just think I’m an old fashioned gal who values faith and family and the power of kindness.  I believe there’s no dream too big and there’s nothing I love that I won’t fight for.  So maybe, some of those people are right.  Some of the time, anyway.

I started this blog in 2008 to simply interact with other moms in the same phase of life I was in.  There was nothing at all online for Orthodox moms, so I created a place where we could meet and talk about all the mishaps and triumphs of raising children within the  Faith.

If you’ve never heard of the Orthodox Church, it’s the oldest Christian faith in existence.  Yeah, we’re real old school.  You can learn more here.  If you really want to dig deep, I highly recommend checking out some of these books.

I published my first children’s book,  A Pocketful of Seeds in 2011. My second book, Songs of Praise was released from Ancient Faith Publishing in 2019. My latest book, and debut novel, Stealing Freedom, hit shelves in April 2022.

My work has been published in lots of places, a few of which include:

-The Dr. Oz Show
-The Washington Post
-The Handmaiden Journal
-The Orthodox Observer
-Pemptousia
-Ancient Faith Radio
-Orthodox Christian Network

This journey has been an amazing ride so far and I thank God every day that I am able to do something I love so much and serve Him, and all of you, at the same time and will continue giving all that I can regardless of how meager it might be in the grand scheme of things.  I put this blog and my life in His hands and will keep on going until He says stop.  And when He says stop, I’ll pour a cup of tea and be thankful for the ride.  Then, I’ll move on to whatever He has planned next for me.

Erma Bombeck said it best when she wrote, “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and I could say, ‘I used everything you gave me.'”

I work hard to promote people and things I believe in.  I can’t help myself without helping others. It’s so exciting to find something inspiring and share it with the world.  If I’ve been blessed by something I want to pass those blessings on to as many people as possible because that’s what makes me happy.

I’ll never endorse anything that I don’t personally love myself and if I love it I will stand behind it and promote it to the ends of the earth!  The brands and companies I work with are among the best regardless of how big or small they might be.  And that’s because I love my readers and think they deserve the best because they are the best.

I’d love to get to know you better as well!  Feel free to connect with me on FacebookInstagramPinterest, YouTube, Patreon or via email at Sylvia@OrthodoxMom.com!

Thanks for dropping by and I hope you’ll check back again!

xoxo,

Sylvia
