Does God punish Wastefulness with Hunger?

With the economy in the state that it is and with it most likely going to worsen before it improves, I wanted to share this homily with you. It's done by Constantine Zalalas who interpreted it from Fr. Athanasios Mitilinaios and is called The Mother of Hunger. This is something I wish I would listen to everyday.

Sometimes I don't realize how wasteful I am; I think of wastefulness in the form of food or extravagance. I feed all of our leftovers to our animals and I don't indulge myself, persay. However after listening to this I realize how wasteful I really am and the fact that I didn't realize this beforehand only proves how used to this way of life I've become.

One thing that he said really stuck in my head. He said that God punishes wastefulness with hunger. How, look at the Great Depression, what was before that? The roaring '20's-a carefree and indulgent era. It's scary to think about, but is also something we can't avoid so it's better to prepare ourselves.

Keep in mind that this homily was recorded over 10 years ago. Pretty prophetic huh? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this...
